Hi,

I would like to know which is the best antivirus s/w that is free and does the job well in the "free AV" league (??).

I have the AVG right now and Norton Antivirus (one that comes with the google pack). What are your opinion on these?

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser.

you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus. i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar.

firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser.

I don't want to pay for antivirus software, i get norton free with my internet service should i go with that or do avg or something like that, what is good for a mac?? any other spyware software, etc..i should get beside antivirus?

run scan disk/check disk

you can try both combinations but i assure you avg and comodo is the best route.....norton is terrible and will drastically slow down even the best systems on the market. the only decent 'norton' product is the corporate antivirus client

If Avast can detect the trojan, it might be able to remove it in safe mode.

To boot into safe mode, turn off your PC, start it again and press F8 during the bootup screen. Then choose to boot into safe mode.

Once in safe mode, do a full system scan using Avast and hopefully it will be able to remove it.

If not, dump Avast and change antivirus' to Avira AntiVir PE Classic and give that a try. It is completely free and has VERY good detection rates. It also uses much less system resources than Avast.

You might need to download some anti-trojan/anti-spyware scanners too.

How do you have room to run any other programs? This might be a little on the paranoid side. I trust my Bitdefender 10 to do everything and it hasn't let me down yet. Maybe I am being naive - but when I had other stuff on there it slowed to a snail's pace..

Scan again with both your programs in safe mode and try and attempt removalagain.

In general, Windows does not allow the deletion of files when they are in use. However, Safe Mode will only load a minimum amount of drivers and services to run Windows, giving removal a better chance. Scan again and attempt to delete while your computer is in safe mode.

To access Safe Mode, reboot then repeatedly press the F8 key at the first screen. The screen will look strange, but don't panic. This is normal in Safe Mode.

When finished removing those pests, reboot again to return to normal mode.

You can change to safe mode which is for when you have a virus, and you can't get rid of it. If you have to you can reformat your computer.
I would suggest that you try to do a System Restore and see if that helps you.

Rating virus/Antispyware/Adware programs?

I'm trying to protect my computer with the best (free) programs that I can. I have Norton that came with my computers' software bundle, but it's a resource hog and is huge.

I've been looking at these for AntiVirus:

AVG - I've tried it already, though a lot of people said it's not that great and doesn't pick up a lot of viruses very well).

Avast - I have tried this one as well...but just the same as with AVG, a lot of people said it wasn't all that great at picking up various viruses.

Trend Micro - I know they have been around for a very long time (I know of them by the years-old name "PC-Cillin" Antivirus).

Nod32 - Not sure if this one costs to buy it...haven't looked into it yet, but a lot of people seemed to like it in reviews that I have red. Never heard of it.

Bit Defender: Apparently this is a free version of some kind of antivirus/antispyware program by Microsoft. It seemed to get good reviews, though.

OK, my friend sent me a link in AIM that I should have tooken my first instinct on by not clicking on it, and it's been causing problems. I am running Windows 2000 SP4. The problems:

1. I have a "Mirar Toolbar" and a toolbar that just says "Search" installed on my computer. I have already tried to go in and remove the program, but it tells me I don't have the prilveliges to do it. I'm the only one who uses this computer.

2. It continues to pop up with different websites offering me stuff that I don't need. It's like whenever I type in any web address, something pops up and bothers me. I have already tried raising my cookie level and that doesn't seem to work.

3. My Norton AntiVirus and Grisoft's AVG Free continues to pop and tell me that I have a trojan horses on my computer. I have went in and had each one go and delete it for me. Ping latency cannot be resolved on your end. Ask your internet provider if they offer something called "Fastpath". This will switch off the error correction feature of DSL lines and thus reduce your Ping latency a bit.

However, try to find a server in your vicinity. Two digit pings are normally only achievable with LAN connections. Not Internet connections.

So no matter what you do to your PC, it won't affect PING.

Maybe try to shut down the McAffee Firewall (but make sure you have Service Pack 2 installed, and the Windows XP firewall active. This is normally enough. The McAfee Firewall will only slow you down.

That's up to you if you want to use 2007 or not. It looks like it'd run slow maybe. Stick with lower though.

your system won't support 2007 you don't have enough memory. 2007 requires 256MB of Ram
Office 2007 is not compatible with windows 2000 pro. You have to use 2003 or lower.
If you are on a tight budget you could use OpenOffice which is free and compatible with Microsoft Office.

For the little RAM you have I would use Office 2000 (maybe even Office 97).

As for antivirus, the easiest FREE one is AVG. You can also try avast! Home edition which is also free.

I personally believe Kapersky to be the best antivirus out there.

Okay, we have all (most of us anyway) been put in a situation where we get a small virus or spyware and pinch it like a pimple. But then, there comes a time, where you pop that pimple, and two more pop up! I'm being... Spammed by spyware and adware! I can bearly type because it continues switching my programs at random intervals. I have tried Avira Anti-Virus and Spybot search and Destroy. I have deleted ALL viruses and ALL spyware but still i get a notice window of viruses and spywares! And little bubbles on the taskbar. I can't buy programs. I am a 20 year old college student using Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron 4150 (about 4 years old). I recently had to have my computer repaired due to spyware %26 viruses that had infested it due to LimeWire and other downloading programs I had previously carelessly used. You said that you had an antivirus software.

i)Generally Antivirus software slows the system.

ii)you should increase your RAM to atleast 256 mb.

iii) when you have a little amount of memory in your drives.

iv)if you installed animated cursors, or if you have modified system fonts styles.colors,etc..

v)install software package for your OS.

vi)if you have still problems,consult the place where you bought

your PC.

Upgrade ur RAM, it is extremelly difficult to work with less than 256

i suggest upgrade the ram to 512
u need more ram plain and simple up it to at LEAST 256 512 would be better
The OS is swapping files to the Drive because your RAM is too small. Put in as much fast RAM as you can.

This over uses the Drive and you can free up Drive space by running FDISK.

Its unlikely to be just Norton, you may also have spyware on your laptop.

To uninstall Norton you need a special tool from the Symantec website.

You may need to switch off System Restore as back up files may be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.

Run your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

Then beef up your security. Its easier to prevent malware getting on to your sytem in the first place rather than trying to remove it. All the following programs are free for home use;

You would lose all those programs he has on it but you can redownload them from www.download.com for free anyway. Good luck

Well, it should work for simple tasks like surfing the 'net, and word processing, but it won't do any games or anything.

It is an alright deal. You might want to check on e-bay and see what laptops on there go for. I'm not up-to-date on current used laptop prices.

And yes, you will need to upgrade the hard drive. Check out www.newegg.com and you can get a much better deal than that for a HDD.

There's this thing on the bottom right of my screen (windows xp) and I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be there. It's a little pop-up bubble (like the windows update) and it says "(warning sign) (bold) System Alert! (end bold) System has detected a number of active spyware applications that my impact the performance of your computer. Click the icon to get rid of unwanted spyware by downloading an up-to-date antispyware solution."

I tried Spybot: Search and Destroy, but it didn't pick it up. Neither did the antivirus software. Any other ideas? free antispyware downloads?

Right now I have trend Micro but it is almost a year out of date(cost me over $30 I thinkg to re-subscribe), I know there is a lot of free stuff out there like AVG which I actually just downlaoded becuz I had a major virus, but it didn't work in getting rid of it actually (Superantispyware)did. So I'm debating on wether to uninstall trend and just go with this free avg, or can someone suggest something different? Does AVG offer free updates, is it a complete antivirus system?

PCTools products do get good reviews. The good thing is they have free versions of their products. They work great. Spyware Doctor from the Google pack is a must. I highly recommend it. I bought Webroots Spysweeper and spyware doctor finds stuff spysweeper does not. Having both is a perfect combo and I recommend running two anti-spyware products.

Your friend did a very wise thing by uninstalling that memory hog. However, as much as I like AVG, the freebie "Avast" anti- virus is actually better. Avast rated higher then Norton in May 2006 but lower in February. AVG tied Norton in May, but lost to it in Feb. I've seen other test where Avast generally rates a little higher than Norton.

Your problem may not be a virus or other software issue. Had same problem a few weeks ago. It was that the inside of the computer was too dusty and it was overheating. I cleaned it out good with canned air and problem went away.

i just recently installed antivirus and antispyware on my computer but the package also included a firewall for free for purchasing the other systems. i talked to a friend who said i should delete the firewall as it will only prevent me from looking at alot of websites. i know the antivirus and antispyware work great as it scanned my computer and removed a bunch of trojans and spyware. but i really dont know exactly what a firewall is. i thought it was a way of protecting my computer from incoming viruses. but my friend said it will only prevent me from getting on websites i might want to look up. i didnt really want it but they included it free. its from the company called webroot if that makes any difference. should i delete it or just leave it?

You already have a proper security system installed on your computer. These days that security software comes bundled with not just Virus protection, but also includes Spyware Protection, Malware protection, Integrated Firewall, Phishing protection, behavioural detection etc.

I have a HP Pavilion Notebook. It is less than 2 years old. I only use it for home use (internet, email, itunes music). I am frustrated at the speed of the machine. It seems to be getting slower all of the time while just doing normal windows tasks. I also frequently hear a grinding noise. Also, it takes so long to burn discs that I don't do that any longer. The machine has a CD-RW, but takes ages just to burn one disc and the machine often freezes when I try to do so.

The disc defrag says it doesn't need defraged (79% free space) and I run disc cleanup regularly. I have updated norton antivirus, lavasoft professional firewall, and ad aware pro.

Is there a way to tell how much of my RAM is being used to determine if that is the problem? Any other suggestions for diagnositcs? I'm sick of this slow machine!!!

Those behaviors are absolutely abnormal,

First, I would check temperature. The noise can be from the fan, maybe it needs maintenance, as fans starts to fail after some years of heavy use. Usually they need lubricant, but the CPU needs to be cooled, if not, then it will slow down to protect itself from permanent damage. It could also be unstable.

If you've got an AMD processor like Sempron or Athlon 64, or Turion, you may want to check at what speed is it running, sometimes people are having problems with the Cool n Quiet driver, when its enabled in bios but not installed in windows.

First thing's first...do you have a Vista Home or an Windowx XP Home edition with a SP. Also you need to pull down the VM size from over 3 GIG to just about 1 GIG as thats what your system will support. You need to understand at a time the OS total memory capacity can be written to the Virtual Mem. i.e. If my system is has 1 GB of RAM, i need a VM size of 1GB itslef as that the maximum paging size the OS will sopport.

If you have DSL, make sure you're not running too much phone line from the jack to your modem. It should probably be around 12 feet at the most. Otherwise it sounds like it's an ISP issue, contact your service provider and tell them what's going on.

Actually, servers are just "beefed up" computers so you should have one very good computer! You have two processors running at 3 ghz (3000Mhz= 3ghz). That should be a very good fast system.

The amount of RAM (memory) is also very important. If you only have 128M of ram you need more. So before anyone can help you we need to know how much memory. 1gig with XP pro should give you a very good system.

With a "server" you also need to check that the correct system "drivers" are loaded. (These control the video, sound, hard drives, etc - inside the computer) If the correct drivers are not loaded you will have poor performance. They are usually available from the manufacturers website.

If you get everything loaded correctly that will be one very nice "computer". The memory size and the hard drive size and drivers are the only limitations that I can think of which might cause you any issues. (Unless the machine is broken!)

ADDED--

well 2x512 is good but the odd 256? Most servers will use memory in pairs So if you have two 512's and one 256 I would tell you to try it with just the two 512's and see if it works better. With XP Pro and 1gig you should be fine.. Mixing memory is usually a bad idea.

It probably slowed down your computer, because it is scanning for viruses. I don't have this problem with Norton Anti-virus. Could it be that you need to uninstall one of the virus protection that you already have?

Did you reboot after you install the trial. I would also check to see if you need to do an defragment and delete your temp files. Also, check to see how much hard drive you have used. I know the more you have used, the slower your computer will get when there isn't enough room on your disk.

I have installed symantec antivirus version 10 in my pc. Today in the noon I found that there were three trojan horses which caught by auto protection. They are Trojan.pandex!inf, backdoor.trojan, and trojan.dropper. I've deleted the files containing these threats cuz they were either cleaned or quarantined. There are two things you can do to speed things up. First, get as much memory as you can afford. Why? Because when you're working or playing games, information is being stored for easy access. Your RAM (random access memory) is the first place the information goes, When you run out of RAM, any additional information is stored on your hard drive in virtual memory. RAM is electronic, a hard drive spins and is mechanical. Therefore, retrieving info from RAM is faster than retrieving it from the hard drive.

The second thing you should do on a regular basis is Disk Cleanup and Defrag.

Click start %26gt; programs %26gt; accessories %26gt; system tools and you will see both options. Do the Disk Cleanup first. After it analyzes your system, checkmark everything and run it. Be patient, it could take a while. After the Disk Cleanup is finished, do the Defrag. This could take a few hours depending on when you last did a defrag.

Of course, you should also have a current antivirus and antispyware on your computer. Make sure you actually use them.

I have the EZ Antivirus program on my computer but it only tells me what files are infected and it doesn't delete them, what do i do? I cant give exact answer, but i suggest you use external task manager to see more comprehensive whats runnin.

Download dTaskManager from dimio.altervista.org then run it.

You may see ALL task runnin, some maybe virus, you can decide wheter it virus or not by lookin it address, if you sure it is unnormal, you can kill the task easily ( which default task manager cant).

First, my condolences about your reinstall. There are some people around here to whom reinstalling seems to be something they do often and without a second thought. I had to last September, and I also went through the reinstallation of all my other software. It took months before everything was back in order.

The general good advice about deleting things that don't seem to be doing anything worthwhile is a loud DON'T TOUCH THEM!

There is no absolute list of what's necessary because computers are so complicated. What might be useless on your machine could be critical on your wife's. We could draw up a list of things that are essential to every Windows XP machine, but it would soon bleed over into the "well, maybe" area.

My solution in the past, when I've had questions like this, is to Google each program individually. Sometimes I see an identification for software, sometimes not. But it's easier than trashing my system by deleting something i need.

I personally use, Avast AV, Spy-bot Search %26 Destroy and Ad-Aware se Personal for the detection of the things you listed. I got them all from dl.com for FREE. Avast has a paid, version, too, as does A-A, but the free versions do just FINE!

Just remember that all the anti-malware progs you can get won't do you a bit of good if they're not UPDATED on a REGULAR basis. (I do mine at least once DAILY.) AND you MUST scan with them at least once a week. (Again, I do this every day before I shut off my computer. The less time stuff is in there the less opportunity it has for doing a LOT of dammage.)

Yes they do slow down your computer (because things constantly run in the background to ensure that you're protected), but would you rather sacrifice a little speed or risk geting a virus?

P.S. Microsoft also has a new program (Windows Live Onecare). I'm not sure about it's performance, but it is about $30 (I think), and you can download a free 90 day trial at microsoft.com.
You may want to consider getting an internet security suite. This will house both antivirus/antispyware products with the addition of other safety programs.

By using a security suite, you cut down on the amount of conflict that can occur when you are using multiple software.

so apparently i have two rootkit files on my computer

they have been detected by spy sweeper and trend micro antivirus (which were recommended to me by best buy) but for some reason they will not get rid of them.

after having surfed the forums on how to get rid of them i tried out bleeping computer and avg free anti-rootkit

with avg antirootkit it came up with 14000+ hidden files and i am unsure wether to delete them all. does anyone know of a free anti-virus, trojan, rootkit or whatever i have that can get rid of these things?

ur computer is infected by spyware/adwares/malwares, these spyware and adwares r used by web masters to advertise thier website using trojans, when ur pc is infected, trojans will show pop ups in ur pc and alert messages, AVG is anti virus tool its not a spyware removal tools that why AVG is unable to remove spyware rootkit from ur pc, anyhow it can detect it and identify it only as spyware is a virus, dont b worried, spyware can be removed using spyware removal tools,u can download spyware killer and adware removals tools from the google link below

I would suggest getting Ad-Aware from www.download.com (it is free).

Also try running the "free scan" on McAfee's website.
