I know that relatively, my laptop (the new compaq presario v3000) should be fast. It has good specs (1GB RAM, 1.66Ghz Core 2 duo). My friend bought an acer with the same specs, but his laptop is faster. is it due to the antivirus (avast free) i have installed? I also want to upgrade my RAM. I recently got a Dell laptop with an Athlon 64 processor and 1GB of RAM, and it has Vista. It seems like it boots awfully slow and it loads programs slow too. I'm going to try uninstalling the antivirus like someone else said, but I really think it's Vista!

Anyway, I heard a story about a tech from IBM who said Vista really needs 4GB of RAM to run effectively. Is it true? I wouldn't be surprised... but then again he also says you need 2GB of RAM for Windows XP, and I don't really agree with him there. 512MB is probably ok, and 1GB seems plenty good.

As for finding out if you can upgrade it, Crucial is pretty good in this respect. They can usually tell you exactly how big of and how many sticks of RAM your machine will support. According to them your machine comes with 2 slots and can support up to 2GB of RAM, so if you want to upgrade you would need to buy two 1GB sticks of RAM. You could buy one 1GB stick of RAM, but (almost definitely) it has two 512MB sticks right now, so you'd only be upgrading to 1.5GB.

Help with firewall please?

I'm thinking of uninstalling Mcafee security centre and using AVG free as my antivirus software.

What I would like advice on is, if I buy a wireless router that has a hardware firewall built in, would the hardware firewall along with the Windows XP SP2 software firewall be enough or would I need a stronger software firewall than the one built into SP2.

Also could you let me know how secure these hardware firewalls are.

The firewall that comes with XP SP2 will do the job. It has been updated recently. The setup you are referring to, is exactly what I have. Windows 98 setup runs at startup!?

I was getting fatal exception 0E errors when starting IE 6. I downloaded and ran some free programs for antivirus (Avast!), a windows utilities, and a registry defragger and was still having exception 0E messages come up. I ran the defragger and then Win 98 setup started running at startup. I always exit and the computer turns off. If I allow it to continue, will I lose my saved files (1,000+ music files, among others), or will I be presented with an option to repair? Thanks!

Better save your data on a CD or DVD first before u attempt anything. Win 98 is old so upgrade it because it's unstable while running later versions of IE which are meant for Win 2000, Me or XP

Did you check to see if the 98 CD was in your drive? That may be what's causing the "setup" to load. Otherwise, do whatever you can to boot normally so you can rescue your files.

It sounds like your system is beyond repair; the best thing you can do is backup your files as soon as you possibly can.

As soon as you save all your files, you should either reinstall Windows 98 with a new file system or switch operating systems entirely. Back in the day, it was not at all uncommon for people to reinstall Windows 98 once every month or two because the system naturally breaks over time. Good operating systems don't do this.

Lots of possibilities... first we need to know how you're using your network, what you're downloading, who your provider is, etc. Also, what kind of/how old is your computer? Memory, etc.?

For example, are you using BitTorrent to download? Comcast has recently begun interfering with BitTorrent downloads by sending a disconnect request to each end of the connection, pretending that each request came from the other end. Class action suits have started in at least two states.

Another possibility... when was the last time you rebooted your router and/or cable/dsl modem? Many routers, especially anything older than a year or two, have trouble handling a lot of simultaneous connections. This can be a problem if you're downloading with eMule, BitTorrent, or, if the router is old enough, just a lot of plain 'ol downloads. Once the router starts to go under, speeds drop, connections are slow, and the only fix is a reboot of the router.

Nortons and McAfee are resource hogs..uninstall them if you have them. (see tool below for Nortons)

Download the programs linked below. Install them. Update them. Scan your pc with them, and do so weekly.

If you have System Restore turned on, the Restore files may be infected, and trying to reinfect your pc. I turn off that feature, reboot to delete the files, then turn it on after a full system scan with AVG.

Turning off System Restore.

(right-click My Computer, Properties, System Restore tab, check the box to turn off System Restore on all drives.)

Restart your PC, and hold down the F8 key.

When you see the Boot Menu appear (black screen white letters), choose SAFE MODE.

Run a FULL SYSTEM SCAN with AVG.

You can heal or quarentine anything found.

Run CCleaner to delete all your Temp and Temporary Internet Files.

You can also run Spybot and AdAware while in Safe Mode. I suggest you do a full system scan. Get rid of anything they find.

It sounds like you have been infected with some kind of malware. Unfortunately, if you find one infection, it is highly likely you have another one.

Since NONE of the anti-spyware/anti-adware programs are 100% accurate in finding and removing spyware, you need at least two programs which you will run one after the other, not at the same time.

There are two excellent free ones:

Spybot, Search and Destroy

and

Ad-Aware

Both are available FREE from www.download.com

You will need to download, install, update and run them, one at a time. Be careful with the NAME of these programs - there are "look-alikes" with very similar names, that are in fact spyware themselves!

After this current infection is cleared up, be sure to run both of the above programs at least once a week if you are on the internet frequently and/or like to download music or files.

Before you run these, clean up (delete) your cookies, temp files and temporary internet files. I prefer to use Ccleaner (available at www.filehippo.com) to do this, rather than the built-in DISK CLEANUP. If you want to use Disk Cleanup, you can find it if you:

This is not a problem at all. Here's what you need to do.

1st, don't waste your time with AVG, true sword, spybot, ad aware, CA, spyhunter, superantispyware, avast, panda, kaspersky, spyware blaster, bitdefender, spyware guard, windows defender or anything of the sort. Stay away from anything that is FREE when it comes to spyware and antivirus. There is a reason why they free. They are NOT good.

2nd, You need some of the best software out there. Norton Systemworks is very good. That's the only good software from Norton. I wouldn't recommend Norton Internet security, its not that great. Now the best software you should get is Spysweeper with Anti-virus, this software is too good and gets better everyday. This is Elite software. It blocks over 450,000 definition threats, which contain multiple fringerprints with each(you can do the math). No other software can compete with that or come close for that matter. It catches everything and has active shields. I've used them all and it is 2nd to none.

3rd, after you install and update the software, since its in your system you will have to turn off system restore and then go into safe mode and run the scan and eliminate the virus. then after removal, reboot and turn system restore back on.

A good one I just used is called the yahoo toolbar. download that and be sure to get the one w/the norton anti virus. i paid over 30.00 for my virus protection called zerospyware and it works great but one day i got a virus and it didn't get rid of it. i downloaded the yahoo toolbar w/norton antispy and it got rid of it for me! so just type yahoo toolbar download in your search box and download that. then when it appears, click on the norton antivirus button to scan. the icon looks like a yellow circle with a bullseye in the middle. it works great.

Who is going to write a virus for the mac?? All it would do is disrupt elementary schools!
Why does it matter that you're going to UNCC? How does that have anything to do with your computer being at risk for viruses? Anyway, I wouldn't worry about it. Nobody writes viruses for the the mac OS. It's more trouble than it's worth, it would affect around 5% of computer users compared to the 90% of people using windows machines. If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it. You'd have to TRY to get a virus on an Apple if you were to ever be afflicted by such a thing.

ClamXav does not protect a Mac. It is used to protect Windows machines which may be being served by the Mac.

AVG Free Edition is an anti-virus program that is very good and 100% free with automatic update. However, it only does anti-virus. Combine with Windows Defender, a free anti-spyware program from Microsoft and the firewall that comes with Windows. AVG and Defender should help eliminate all that you have now, and that with the firewall should help prevent things in the future. It's not the best protection, but it is free.
