How can I determine how much RAM is being used on my laptop?

I have a HP Pavilion Notebook. It is less than 2 years old. I only use it for home use (internet, email, itunes music). I am frustrated at the speed of the machine. It seems to be getting slower all of the time while just doing normal windows tasks. I also frequently hear a grinding noise. Also, it takes so long to burn discs that I don't do that any longer. The machine has a CD-RW, but takes ages just to burn one disc and the machine often freezes when I try to do so.

The disc defrag says it doesn't need defraged (79% free space) and I run disc cleanup regularly. I have updated norton antivirus, lavasoft professional firewall, and ad aware pro.

Is there a way to tell how much of my RAM is being used to determine if that is the problem? Any other suggestions for diagnositcs? I'm sick of this slow machine!!!

Those behaviors are absolutely abnormal,

First, I would check temperature. The noise can be from the fan, maybe it needs maintenance, as fans starts to fail after some years of heavy use. Usually they need lubricant, but the CPU needs to be cooled, if not, then it will slow down to protect itself from permanent damage. It could also be unstable.

If you've got an AMD processor like Sempron or Athlon 64, or Turion, you may want to check at what speed is it running, sometimes people are having problems with the Cool n Quiet driver, when its enabled in bios but not installed in windows.

First thing's first...do you have a Vista Home or an Windowx XP Home edition with a SP. Also you need to pull down the VM size from over 3 GIG to just about 1 GIG as thats what your system will support. You need to understand at a time the OS total memory capacity can be written to the Virtual Mem. i.e. If my system is has 1 GB of RAM, i need a VM size of 1GB itslef as that the maximum paging size the OS will sopport.

Turn off Aero for one thing. You are pushing the limits it looks like.

Try system file checker and see if that helps.

My broadband speed is 2Mbps but my download speed rarely goes above 4 KBps(yes it's "KBps"-kilobytes per second

It took me more than half hour to download Google toolbar.This Yahoo! answers page itself took more than 13 mins to open in mozilla firefox with fasterfox extension. If you have DSL, make sure you're not running too much phone line from the jack to your modem. It should probably be around 12 feet at the most. Otherwise it sounds like it's an ISP issue, contact your service provider and tell them what's going on.
run a disk defragmentator and then a disk cleanup on ur pc
Some thing is terribly wrong have you checked your connections, also it my be trouble on the network
Which ISP do you have.I have 512 kbps speed and a page takes two or more seconds to open.Maybe you are fooled or something or got the wrong renewing pack or somethig.Contact your ISP.

Why won't zone alarm firewall work with CA anti-virus.?

Everytime I go to download the free zone alarm firewall it says i have to uninstall the CA antivirus or it will conflict with it. This is supposed to be part of the internet package and they won't work together.

i bought this computer a month ago from a store used with xp pro i just checked out the system and it had 2 Processors computer x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 1 GenuineIntel ~3000 Mhz turns out my computer is a server computer ever a week after i got it ive been having problems i just reinstalled windows got service pack 2 is there any progams to make it run better that is free i know i have no viruses i just downloaded the best antivirus with spyware protection

Actually, servers are just "beefed up" computers so you should have one very good computer! You have two processors running at 3 ghz (3000Mhz= 3ghz). That should be a very good fast system.

The amount of RAM (memory) is also very important. If you only have 128M of ram you need more. So before anyone can help you we need to know how much memory. 1gig with XP pro should give you a very good system.

With a "server" you also need to check that the correct system "drivers" are loaded. (These control the video, sound, hard drives, etc - inside the computer) If the correct drivers are not loaded you will have poor performance. They are usually available from the manufacturers website.

If you get everything loaded correctly that will be one very nice "computer". The memory size and the hard drive size and drivers are the only limitations that I can think of which might cause you any issues. (Unless the machine is broken!)

ADDED--

well 2x512 is good but the odd 256? Most servers will use memory in pairs So if you have two 512's and one 256 I would tell you to try it with just the two 512's and see if it works better. With XP Pro and 1gig you should be fine.. Mixing memory is usually a bad idea.
