Laptop virus (trojan)?

My friend has managed to install a trojan on his laptop, and has asked me to help. I have installed Sophos antivirus and firewall (free from our university) and run all necessary scans. Sophos detects and quarantines what appears to be the virus, but unfortunately the problem remains. He is completely unable to access the internet (not sure why, I thought most trojans wanted you to get online so they could steal your passwords etc). I have tried other virus scanners, although admittedly they were free ones with the same result - the virus files are detected but continue to operate. Any ideas/suggestions? Also, he has a desktop computer - is it safe to transfer his documents from the laptop to the desktop if scanned for viruses first?

Try a system restore, if that doesn't work then reinstalling the OS might be your best bet

My boyfriend got a trojan on his comp from downloading a PC game hack... it was a backdoor mIRC virus. (pain in the ***, let's just say that)

What I did was look it up on the internet. Be careful what you go to obviously, but there's a lot of message boards and geek websites that database how to remove viruses and trojans.

Computer RAM?

When I bought my computer it had 512MB of RAM. Now it has 446. Can anyone tell me where the memory went? Is there a way to regain it? As you can tell, I don't know a lot about it.

Also, I need the 512 to download my antivirus. It comes free with my ATT membership. But if you know of any good, FREE antiviruses, please let me know.

all ram is like that. this just tell you how much of the ram is not being used. you still have 512. To better improve your computer performance, i suggest upgrading to 1gb of ram.
It should be 448.You looked on the box or in the Manual-did you ever look really on your computer?

If you buy a computer that says 512MB that means it has a RAM from 512MB,but your Video card from 64MB uses that from the 512-so you should have 448MB.

better to format the harddisk and go servicepack 3 .

First, what is a excellent antivirus that is free, i hear that (Avira detacts 98.85%)

Second, When i reformat my hard drive and delete the old partition to remove old files and errors and more, when i do a reformat and repartition it, if i get any virus at the end i know that i have to scan right away, but deleting the old partition i be removing any viruse from my pc?

antivirus does your PC more harm then good, all of them. give this a try for a week, download Mozilla firefox, opera or safari then ditch internet explorer in other word don't use it, why??? cause its a bug magnet. and you will never have another issue

Reformatting should destroy any viruses. If you get a stubborn virus try and vapourlock the sucker by scanning in safe mode and use AVG anti-virus free edition available here:

Yeap, you can kill any virus by removing the partition, it basically kills almost anything there.

Do i need more TO protect from malware?

Cause i use avira antivirus personaledition classic free version. I just installed ad-aware for spyware protection. Do i need to install a malware protection for malware protection or avira comes with it? I am very worried cause yesterday i had a warning from mcafee site advisor and accidentaly clicked it and then i got a message saying something ur computer is infected with a malware. Then i used avira to scan but it didnt catch anything. And i dont want to log on anything cause i dunno maybe some1 is watching me. I also did system restore to an earlier day b4 it happened and wen i turned on computer i didnt get the message anymore doesi t mean it gone? Or should i install a malware protection?

Sorry but I dunno how god Avira is. I'd recommend you to get hte ZoneAlarm Internet Security, cuz it's known to have the best firewall, and u seem to know it too. Back then, now that it uses Kaspersky's Scanning Engine, it got the best Anti-Virus, too. And the Anti-Spyware is really cool. It finds everything, I took the Spy-Sweeper trial, scanned my pc for Spyware and it found nothing, which means the Anti-Spyware had found everything.
avira detection rate is like kaspersky and they are the most perfect antiviruses.you donot need any protection forget about this

The reason might be the security setting of your browser.

Using Internet Explorer you may try Tools/Internet Options/Security tab/Custom level button

Then search Sripting, and enable Active scripting.

Please note that it can be harmfull always enabling active scripting.

I had the same problem when I was using windows 98 se, so I changed to windows xp now ok.
I'm afraid the answer is going to involve more questions, but it should be fairly straightforward. It sounds like as the problem is only on certain sites and with things like videos you probably dont have an up to date internet browser. Its less likely to be a virus :)

What version of browser are you using? You can check this by going to the top menu and choosing Help%26gt;About. If you're using Internet Explorer, the latest version is 7. Once you have that, there are various other bits of software or 'plug ins' that you will need to run the fancy stuff including videos, such as Flash and Java, but this should be built into the latest version of Internet Explorer and if the sites dont work they should really say why and prompt you to download the latest version of what you need.

If none of this is the problem, what are the error messages you get?
